SESSIONS, founded in 2020 by entrepreneur Radu Negulescu, emerged as a response to the challenges posed by the sudden shift to remote and hybrid work.
Recognizing the need for an enhanced meeting experience, the founder set out to simplify meetings. Radu Negulescu, having sold his majority stake in Trencadis, redirected his focus towards SESSIONS.
SESSIONS streamline meetings, facilitating a seamless integration of native tools and productivity apps, such as Google Drive and Miro, providing teams with the ability to structure meetings effectively, access pertinent information, and deliver content within a unified workspace. The platform serves a wide range of purposes, from sales pitches and product demos to webinars and user research, empowering teams to optimize their collaborative efforts.
What experiences led to founding Sessions?
Before building SESSIONS, I bootstrapped one of Romania’s biggest system integrators, Trencadis. A $30 mil + company still operational today, a solution provider for the Romanian government and many corporate enterprises. We built mission-critical systems like the national quick alert system - RO-Alert - and many more. Still the CEO there when the pandemic started, I had the initiative to set up a multi-company task force to support the government with critical support while the first lockdowns were enforced. Suddenly, full remote on a national level put huge amounts of pressure on all systems. I’ve invited big players like Telekom, CISCO, and others to join. Many of them accepted to join.
As initiator, I had to organize our first board meeting. A meeting to define our mission & setup, our top priorities & and means of operation. But for the first time, we were in the impossibility of meeting offline, though the meeting had to be efficient. And productive. I considered the moment a learning opportunity, a perfect context to understand better how to operate in that new reality.
I handled the entire process. No PA, assistance, or anything else; I managed the board from end to end. In 60 mins, online, we perfectly did more than we sometimes did in 4 to 6 hours offline. But to execute it, I worked several good hours, to set the agenda and the content, send proper invites, align everyone beforehand, do follow-ups and reminders, and all that hassle. I context-switch hundreds of times through several apps and put a lot of energy into moving things forward & aligning them.
The board went great, though my initiative was killed by the government. But while trying, I had the supreme epiphany. Good meetings are hard. They required thoughtful planning and thorough execution. They require us to put people, tools, and content in harmonious dynamics. Hundreds of trillions of hours and dollars are lost every year from inefficient meetings, and nobody is focused on solving the problem. So I quit Trencadis after 13 years of building there, exited the company, and committed fully to SESSIONS to solve meetings.
A lot of people and businesses are familiar with Teams or Zoom. How is Sessions different or better?
SESSIONS is committed to solving meetings. To solve the problem of inefficient meetings. Teams, Zoom, Meet, and all are video-conferencing software in support of the process, but they are not solving meetings. In many’s opinion, these tools are a reason why a lot of our modern meetings are worse. Though we also have video-conferencing capabilities, we’re not a video-conferencing platform. We're about solving meetings, and we're doing this by pushing a better concept instead: the session.
An intelligent meeting with a clear structure, direction, and outcomes. An engineered meeting. An entity, more than just an abstract blocker. A companion working in our interest. Our mission is to enable unimaginable productive sessions way easier than those old-school meetings lacking structure & direction, with no outcomes & conclusions, nor participation or collaboration. And we'll do it by perfectly blending all-encompassing technology ( incl. hardware in the future) with hyper-specific best practices & methodologies. Innovation, mixed with well-packed knowledge, all bundled in a seamless service. With SESSIONS, an early entrepreneur will organize world-class board meetings in minutes.
A bold marketer will do mind-blowing brainstorming, more meaningful and way easier than before. A community manager will instantly organize more engaging town halls than ever. A kick-ass yearly strategy will be done collaboratively in a few engaging hours, not days. A holistic way to solve meetings. A way to make meetings way more enjoyable while way more effective.
How do you plan to influence the future of virtual collaboration, particularly in enhancing productivity for various professional scenarios?
At SESSIONS, we're obsessing about solving meetings in general. Not only virtual. We plan to solve them in all formats: online, hybrid, offline, small-scale, big scale. By using our proprietary blend of methodology & technology, SESSIONS enables unprecedented productivity, already achieving 3x productivity on use cases like large group training & user interviews.
Our framework is infinitely scalable, with SESSIONS being capable of serving endless hyper-customized cases. SESSIONS' mission is to empower all of us to be rockstars of communication & collaboration, to engage and interact in ways impossible in the meetings era.
How does Sessions stay ahead in industry trends in the evolving landscape of remote work and virtual collaboration?
Usually, we’re not interested in staying ahead of industry trends; our entire focus is on solving meetings.
Of course, in this quest, we’re always leveraging top technologies out there to solve the problem. AI, for example, already plays a crucial role, in providing great value to our customers.
What are you most proud of in this journey as a founder of Sessions?
The fact that I’m working with the greatest team I’ve ever worked with in my 20-year entrepreneurial career. Out-of-this-world hyper-ambitions while beautifully-casual crew.
Extremely proud of them and how we all aligned around the mission. There is no reason why not to make our dent in this world, by solving meetings. We’re in the perfect form.
What challenges do you foresee for Sessions in the future, and how is the company prepared to overcome them?
There are endless challenges ahead; we’re not afraid of them. We believe that if we provide sufficient value with our service if we can hyper-increase the productivity of our customers, no challenge is big enough to derail us.
How do Sessions attract and retain top talent, and are there specific initiatives, like employee stock options, in place or planned?
I think there are 3 pillars explaining why SESSIONS has attracted and retained so talented people. Top hyper-relevant mission, equity ownership & a medium in which to thrive and grow like no other. In the best possible companionship.
Why should investors consider joining this opportunity?
It’s the last time SESSIONS will be so cheap. We plan a 4x at least Series A in the next 12 to 18 months, and after that, it’s hard to talk about limits.
If we succeed in our purpose of solving meetings, the potential value of our endeavor is colossal. This is why I invested without hesitation $4.5 million out of my resources in this. And also why I’ll invest whatever more will be needed. Our purpose is audacious, but so will be the outcomes.
